I should like to record how i am feeling as I read white nights with regard to the essay i read last night! "Essay as realm."

I'm struck by the realm-ness of this story, and especially because it seems such a reflection on the same topic; again, a work that both is a realm and speaks of them; the narrator speaks of the city.

"I know the houses too. . . . I shall never forget an incident with a very pretty house of a light pink colour. . . ." and a short tale unfolds, in which the house, once pink, is painted "yellow as a canary." "the colour of the Celestial Empire."

"So now you understand, reader, in what sense I am acquainted with all Petersburg."

I feel the tether in the gutters of which Gabbert spoke in 'the essay as realm.' The difference between short paragraphs and long, long, long ones. When I am feeling lost I find myself searching for the next transition.

Where are you taking me now? Where shall i end up?
